Michigan Tech’s Built World Enterprise is a collection of research and design projects dedicated to advancing the built world engineers design and construct. Students participate in various competitions that involve research, design, prototyping, and presenting their results. Topics range from green infrastructure, rainwater management, and building structures. Current competitions include; Steel Bridge Team, WERC Environmental Design Competition, EPA Rainworks Competition, Timber Strong, and Engineers Without Borders.
Students seek advice from professionals in the field and make connections with professors on and off campus. During enterprise class students practice presenting to the class, asking/answering questions, and assisting each other’s writing skills. All members of the enterprise are invested in helping the others succeed. This positive encouragement is present as we critique and challenge each other’s designs in order to identify mistakes and make improvements. At the competitions students present their findings, learn from other teams, and connect with professionals as well as other students. The Enterprise provides a great opportunity for students to grow in a supportive environment.
